Tennis players arriving in Australia for the first Grand Slam of the year are having to be creative when it comes to practise this time around.

More than 70 players who arrived in three Australian Open charter flights have been sent into hard quarantine, which mean they cannot leave their hotel rooms for 14 days, after a few people in the flight later tested positive for Covid-19.

Other players who arrived on different flights are also undertaking a mandatory quarantine but are permitted to leave their hotel rooms for five hours a day to train.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur can be seen hitting the ball on an upturned spare mattress in her room.

“As you all know, I am one of the players that has been placed in full isolation. Not the easiest news to get but staying strong and making the best of it. I am committed to do whatever it takes to get ready despite the circumstances. Time to get creative,” she tweeted with a video of her practising in the room.

World number 38 Barbora Strycova posted a video of herself assembling an exercise bike and joked she may have found her true calling.

“I guess I found my post tennis career job. Anyone in need of my services? We can make it happen after these 14 days. #engineerBee,” she tweeted.

French Open champion Iga Swiatek can be seen running around in the room, replicating her movements on a tennis court.

The Australian Open is scheduled to be played from February 8-21.
