Former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja has lauded England’s preparation and planning for the much-anticipated tour of India, saying the visitors will be accustomed to sub-continent conditions as they spent a few weeks in Sri Lanka before heading to Chennai.
Ramiz Raja said England have generally travelled better than most teams and it showed with the way they were able to dominate Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. The Pakistan cricketer-turned analyst said he expects a cracker of a contest between the two sides in the upcoming 4-Test series.
England reached Chennai for the first 2 matches of a 4-Test series, starting February 5. Joe Root’s men spent close to a month in Sri Lanka for a 2-Test series which they won 2-0. The visitors were dominating Sri Lanka both with the bat and the ball as Root led from the front.
Captain Root scored 426 runs in 2 Tests as he hit a double hundred and 186, helping England seize the initiative with big first-innings totals. Spinners Dom Bess and Jack Leach picked up 22 wickets between them while pacers Stuart Broad and James Anderson were among the wickets as well.
“England scheduled their tours perfectly. They have gone to India after playing in Sri Lanka so they are accustomed now to subcontinent conditions. England will take confidence from their series win in Sri Lanka and it will be a good series,” Ramiz Raja told a YouTube channel.
“It is a series between the top two Test sides because Australia has been beaten at home and I like the New Zealand team because of their captain (Kane Williamson) but I think on overseas tours, England have done better than them.”
England and India will begin training in Chennai after completing their mandatory quarantine period from Monday. The two teams will meet in the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium from February 5. The first Test will be played in front of empty stands due to the Covid-19 protocols.
