  • Rishabh Pant was dimissed on 91 off 88 balls on Day 3 in Chennai
  • This is the 4th time Pant has been dismissed in the 90s in Tests
  • Only MS Dhoni has more scores in 90s for wicketkeeper-batsman in Tests

Rishabh Pant lived by the sword and died by it, once again! The India wicketkeeper came up with a counter-attacking 91 on Day 3 of the 1st Test against England in Chennai and when the 3-figure score was in sight, Pant was dismissed by off-spinner Dom Bess.

Once again, Rishabh Pant went for a big hit but he was not able to middle the ball while trying to smash it against the spin. He got a thick edge and Jack Leach took a good catch at deep cover to send the India star walking back to the pavillion, 9 runs short of another well-deserved hundred.

With the 91 on Sunday in Chennai, Pant holds the record for the most number of scores in the 90s since his Test debut in 2018. Pakistan captain Babar Azam is second on the list with 3 scores in the 90s in the longest format of the game.

Pant’s 90s in Tests

vs West Indies in Rajkot in 2018 – 92

vs West Indies in Hyderabad in 2018 – 92

vs Australia in Sydney in 2021 – 97

vs England in Chennai in 2021 – 91

Only MS Dhoni has more scores in Tests in the 90s as a wicketkeeper-batsman than Rishabh Pant. England’s Alan Knott and Australia’s Rod Marsh also have 4 scores in the 90s in Test matches as wicketkeeper-batsmen.

Notably, Pant had gotten out in a similar fashion in the New Year’s Test against Australia in Sydney last month. Pant was batting on 97. Pant skipped down the track and tried to loft Nathan Lyon over mid-off but he got a thick edge and was caught at point. Pant came up with a counter-attacking knock in Sydney as well but his dismissal jolted India’s hopes of chasing down a record total of 408. However, India managed to eke out a memorable draw in Sydney before going on to win the series after breaching Australia’s Gabba fortress.

On Sunday, Pant joined hands with Cheteshwar Pujara when India were in a spot of bother at 73 for 4 in response to England’s 578 after having lost captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane for 6 and 1, respectively.

However, Pant and Pujara stitched a 100-plus stand for the 5th wicket to make sure India did not succumb cheaply in their first innings. England fought back with Dom Bess removing Pujara and Pant in quick succession.
